Alright lads, it's Halloween AND we've got plenty of treats!
Special guest, horror aficionado and co-host of The Podcast Macabre, Joe Meyers brings us a list of somewhat overlooked, underserved, indie and lesser known horror movies. Modern vampires. Serial killers. Creepy cults and more make up for an excellent slate of scary films for your Halloween viewing.
I’ve known Joe for sometime and what is (remarkably) our first actual conversation with one another we dive into some truly dynamic horror movies. Whether you’re into comedy horror with plenty of gore and self awareness, or you’re prone to slow burning, unnerving atmospheres, Joe has brought a collection that offers a little something for everyone.
HORROR MOVIES FOR HALLOWEEN
Justin Seaman’s retro inspired love letter to Halloween can be found on AMAZON PRIME
Karyn Kusama’s slow burning, thriller is available to watch right now on NETFLIX
You can catch Lucky McKee’s unsettling indie horror from the early 00’s over on TUBI
You can catch Michael O’Shea’s tale of Modern Vampires of the City over on SHUDDER
This allusive rare find is available…somewhere! If you find this intense New Zealand export from the late 90’s, please let me know where!
Outside of his recommendations I also got to talk to Joe about the Horror genre as a whole. How long he’s been a fan. What it means to him and how it can be such a subjective window and a mirror for real world issues.
There was plenty more conversation, which unfortunately I couldn’t quite fit in this episode BUT some of it does spill over into the HALLOWEEN BONUS EPISODE.
In said bonus episode, you can hear Joe talk about finding the real world locations for iconic movie landmarks, especially those featured in Horror Movies. We’re talking legendary real estate here like Lori Strode’s house from John Carpenter’s infamous classic Halloween.
I also dig into a few spooky, real life locations within the US. Places that are rife with folklore and horrific history.
So don’t be a jerk-o-lantern, trick or treat o’self and give the HALLOWEEN BONUS a spin!
as mentioned in the episode you can find joe on a couple of other podcasts. both of which are definitely worth digging into.
The first is THE PODCAST MACABRE a show presented by three friends and certified lovers of Horror. If it’s your favourite genre or you’re looking to break beyond the obvious and discover some great films it’s totally worth diving into.
As is, IT’S ON MY LIST a panel based show comprised of knowledgeable, passionate cinephiles who aim to strike off a number of illusive films their list of unseen features.
